History

In 1950-s the seeds of Balagokulam were sown in the pages of ‘Kesari Weekly’ as a special column for children. In the early 1970-s Balagokulam units started in several places of Kerala. Shri, M.A. Krishnan, the then Chief Editor of ‘Kesari’, took initiative to organize this movement to counter the cultural deterioration caused by the drawbacks of our education system. Many renowned personalities like wellknown poet Kunjunni Master, Mali, N.N.Kakkad contributed their intellectual prominence to Balagokulam’s functional style.
In the year 1977 Balagokulam conducted its first Shobhayathra(procession) on Janmashtami day, in Kozhikode city. It was a new experience for Kerala when hundreds of children and parents were moving through the streets with Krishna bhajans. Then, Sreekrishnajayanthi festival spreads all over the Kerala, and Government declared it as a holiday. Gradually Balagokulam developed as a big cultural movement.
In 1980, Balagokulam became a state-wide organization with its first Annual General Meeting at Guruvayoor, which was inaugurated by the great poet laureate Akkitham. It was registered in 1981 as a national-wide cultural movement
